Fraud by Falsifying an Accident
On Thursday, October 10, 2024, an 83-year-old woman from Neu Olvenstedt, a district of Magdeburg, was defrauded of several thousand euros by falsely claiming a family accident. Around 12:30 pm, the 83-year-old woman from St.-Josef-Straße received a call from someone claiming to be a doctor. The caller informed her that a family member had caused an accident, resulting in a woman and two children being seriously injured. To prevent the family member from being arrested, the 83-year-old was asked to deposit a bail of 50,000 euros. As the woman could not come up with 50,000 euros, a lower five-digit sum was agreed upon with the supposed doctor. Around 2:30 pm, the 83-year-old met an unknown male perpetrator at a street corner as arranged and handed over the five-digit cash sum. After about 90 minutes, the woman became suspicious and contacted family members to inquire about the alleged accident, which had never actually happened. Subsequently, the police were informed and began their investigation into the fraud.

The unknown male perpetrator was described by the 83-year-old woman as follows:
– Male
– Approximately 30 years old
– Around 170cm tall
– Black curly hair

The police explicitly warn against the ongoing phenomenon of such scams and thefts, and urge the public to raise awareness and educate especially the elderly, who may not be reached by the police through public outreach efforts.
