Berlin’s Largest Useless Parking Lot: No one is allowed to park on the XXL Parking Deck

Berlin – Lots of space – for nothing! The parking deck Nord at the Südkreuz station in Tempelhof-Schöneberg has never had a car parked on it in almost 20 years. This is because there is no ramp for cars to get up to the top. Is it a foolish prank or a planning mistake? Berlin’s largest pointless parking lot! It was built in 2005/2006 by Deutsche Bahn as part of the new construction on the roof of the station, but it was never put into operation. The structure doesn’t even have an entrance at one of the city’s most important traffic junctions, where even ICE trains stop.

„It is true that there is no way to drive a car onto the parking deck,“ said the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Construction.

Here is where the entrance to the parking deck was supposed to be built. However, it was never realized. Reason: too uneconomical, no demand

Since almost 20 years, the area above the S-Bahn tracks of the S2 and S25 lines has been decaying. On the other hand, the South parking deck can be used: there are over 200 parking spaces there. Due to the traffic situation and the proximity to the Schöneberg motorway interchange, parking garages for 2500 vehicles were planned in the area.

Big plans – but apparently there was no longer a need for the North parking deck. The already built entrance from the street leads to nowhere.

A spokesperson for the railway to BILD: „It was planned as a second parking area, as an extension for the South parking deck.“ Due to insufficient demand and lack of profitability, the development was not implemented.

However, the district and Deutsche Bahn plan to convert the wasteland in the future – green, sustainable, and usable for the public.
