At Rot-Weiss Essen, things are not going well in the attack – Essen’s Marcus Steegmann defends his attackers.
Rot-Weiss Essen had several good opportunities in the first half of the third division match against Viktoria Köln. However, it was goalless going into the break, with two old patterns emerging. Opportunities were missed up front, and an individual mistake by Jimmy Kaparos almost led to a goal against – Bryan Henning’s shot hit the crossbar and went onto the line.
During the break, Marcus Steegmann, Director of Professional Football at RWE, spoke on a few topics on MagentaSport:
Marcus Steegmann on…
… the current situation at RWE: „Overall, we are not satisfied. The 16th place is not what we had in mind. There has been a major upheaval – throughout the club. We knew it could be bumpy, and it has been. We have lost key people, and now we are working on the team coming together and taking the next step. I have seen more than good tendencies here lately.“
… the first half against Köln: „We had good moments where we unfortunately didn’t score. Köln is very well organized, but we still had two top opportunities.“
… the guests‘ shot hitting the crossbar: „We want to build up, and Jimmy Kaparos made the mistake, it’s hard to say if the ball was in. With RWE glasses, the ball was still on the line.“
… the lack of points so far: „In football, you never have time. In general, we also expect that the improved training performances will lead to points. I don’t want to quantify that in games. We just need to start getting points quickly.“
… the lack of goals from the strikers: „In general, we have faith in our strikers. Leonardo Vonic had 15 goal involvements last season, so I expect him to take the next steps. Manuel Wintzheimer didn’t have an easy year at Arminia Bielefeld, but he is a great team player. But he also needs to do more. Everyone in the team is required to show goal threat. Even from set pieces, which was a strength for us last year. I resist the idea of calling our attack bad already.“
