The iconic „Hamburger Hof“ building on Jungfernstieg is one of Hamburg’s most prominent landmarks. Currently used as a shopping arcade, this red sandstone structure is set to undergo a transformation. The first details of the renovation project have recently been revealed.

140 years ago, the „Hamburger Hof“ was considered the most luxurious hotel in the city. It hosted kings from England, Denmark, and Thailand during their visits to Hamburg. The glamorous balls held here were truly legendary. Unfortunately, in 1917, a fire destroyed the hotel. After World War II, the „Hamburger Hof“ was converted into an office building and shopping arcade. However, business has not been thriving there since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The owner has been planning the renovation for six years, and finally, the project is set to commence next year.

Stefan Haas, the Managing Director of MEAG, promises that the renovation will make a valuable contribution to strengthening the city center. MEAG is responsible for managing the assets of the reinsurance company Munich Re Group. Hamburg’s Chief Building Director, Franz-Josef Höing, reveals that the revamped „Hamburger Hof“ will feature an exciting mix of retail stores, restaurants, modern office spaces, and residential units, all while preserving the building’s historical significance.

According to NDR 90,3, the shopping arcade will be closed during the five-year renovation period. Once completed, only the ground floor will house retail shops.

The transformation of the „Hamburger Hof“ is eagerly awaited by both locals and visitors alike. The revitalization of this historic building is expected to breathe new life into the city center, offering a unique blend of commerce, dining, workspaces, and living spaces. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting redevelopment project.
