Sieben Schweizer Animationsfilme am Filmfestival in Annecy

The International Animation Film Festival in Annecy is set to showcase seven Swiss films and co-productions, including Claude Barras‘ „Sauvages.“ The festival, starting on Sunday in France, features a diverse range of Swiss talent in various competition sections.

„Sauvages,“ directed by Claude Barras from Valais, made its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will be screened in the feature film section at Annecy. This Swiss-Belgian-French co-production by Geneva’s Nadasdy Film Studio tells an ecological fable set in the rainforest of the Southeast Asian island of Borneo.

Another Swiss feature film at the festival is „Reise der Schatten“ by artist Yves Netzhammer from Schaffhausen, competing in the Contrechamp category. Netzhammer explores with surreal imagery what defines humanity in the technological age.

Short films are also making waves at the festival, with Jadwiga Kowalska’s animated road movie „The car that came back from the sea“ being featured in the short film competition. The film follows six friends on a journey to the Polish Baltic Sea in a rundown car, where their vehicle and country begin to disintegrate, capturing memories and snapshots from the past. The film was nominated for the Swiss Film Award 2024.

In addition to „Sauvages,“ Nadasdy Films has co-produced three animated short films being showcased at Annecy: „La boulangerie de Boris“ by Maša Avramović in the Young Audiences competition, „Lola et le piano à bruits“ by Augusto Zanovello, and „Une guitare à la mer“ by Sophie Roze in the TV Films competition. Matthias Schüpbach’s short film „Searching for the 5th Direction“ will also be featured in the Diploma Films competition.

Founded in 1960, the festival is considered one of the most important events for animation films. This year’s edition runs from June 9th to June 15th.
