Europawahl 2024: Volt’s Vision for a Stronger Europe
Berlin – Volt, the pan-European party, is making its second appearance on the ballot for the European elections in Germany. With their eye-catching lilac campaign posters bearing slogans like „For more Ice“ or „Don’t be a jerk,“ Volt aims to bring a fresh perspective to European politics.
Founded in 2018, Volt Germany sees itself as a response to the rise of right-wing populism in Europe post-Brexit. In the 2019 European elections, Volt garnered 0.7% of the votes in Germany, securing Damian Boeselager a seat in the European Parliament. Boeselager, the party’s lead candidate for the upcoming election, has aligned with the Greens during his tenure. On a local level, Volt’s socially liberal stance is making waves in city councils such as Düsseldorf, Darmstadt, and Frankfurt.
Central to Volt’s agenda is a call for a stronger European Union. Advocating for a European constitution, increased citizen participation in EU decision-making, and empowering the European Parliament to propose legislation, Volt aims to enhance the EU’s democratic legitimacy. By championing these reforms, Volt hopes to counter the influence of right-wing populist parties. Additionally, Volt advocates for the appointment of an EU finance and foreign minister, as well as the creation of a European army.
In the realm of environmental policy, Volt is pushing for ambitious climate action. With a goal of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2040 through carbon minimization and carbon capture technologies, Volt emphasizes the need for socially equitable climate neutrality. The party also advocates for taxing environmentally harmful consumption and high wealth, while investing in infrastructure, high-speed trains, efficient public transport, and faster internet connections to combat the impacts of the climate crisis and stimulate economic growth.
As the 2024 European elections approach, Volt’s vision for a united and sustainable Europe is poised to resonate with voters across the continent.
