Michael Wollenberg, a renowned star-gastronome in Germany, tragically lost his life in an accident while on his way to North Cyprus. The news of his passing has spread among his friends in Hamburg, where he was known for his restaurants such as „Wattkorn,“ „Eichenkrug,“ and „Marlin.“ His close friend Carsten Marek from the famous bar „Ritze“ on the Hamburg Reeperbahn expressed shock at the news, mentioning that Wollenberg had spent two days in the intensive care unit before succumbing to his injuries.

According to reports, Wollenberg was en route to North Cyprus, where he had recently bought a house, seeking a fresh start away from Germany and its politics. His longtime partner of 18 years confirmed his death. Bernd Wehmeyer, former HSV legend, recalled spending time with Wollenberg the night before his departure, emphasizing his friend’s desire to leave the daily grind in Germany behind and start a new chapter in Cyprus.

Wollenberg had hired a driver for his luxury motorhome, and it is believed that he was resting during the journey when the fatal accident occurred. Despite being rushed to a hospital in Istanbul with severe injuries, including a suspected lung rupture, skull trauma, and fractures, the star-gastronome could not be saved. The driver of Wollenberg’s motorhome survived the crash.

Throughout his career, Wollenberg hosted legendary parties at his restaurant on the Alster waterfront, attracting celebrities and luminaries from various fields. His establishments, including the acclaimed „Wattkorn,“ earned him recognition as one of the world’s best fish chefs.
