Latest European Election Poll Shows Tight Race for Second Place

The interest in the European elections is high. Surveys before the election show a tight race for second place. Many voters are still undecided. Mainz/Brussels – On June 9th, the new European Parliament will be elected. Shortly before the elections, the „ZDF Politbarometer“ shows which party is currently leading in the 2024 European elections. The Union seems to be firmly in first place at the moment – however, the outcome for second place remains uncertain. The survey also indicates that this year’s European elections are considered significantly more relevant.

In the „ZDF Politbarometer Extra“ on June 7th, the CDU/CSU remains unchanged in first place with 30 percent. The race for second place is exciting, with the Greens, SPD, and AfD tied at 14 percent each. The FDP is at four percent, followed by the Left with three percent. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) reaches seven percent and Volt three percent. The other parties together are at 11 percent, with no party reaching at least three percent.

Compared to the 2019 European elections, the survey shows significant losses for the Greens, who received a record result of 20.5 percent back then. The SPD and Union, on the other hand, had significant losses in 2019 and can now expect results at a similar level to five years ago.

The interest in the 2024 European elections is higher compared to the previous election. 61 percent of respondents stated a strong interest in the European elections, while 38 percent denied this. In 2019, only 56 percent expressed interest in the EU election, and in 2014, it was only 38 percent. The survey also revealed that at the time of the survey, 42 percent were still unsure of whom and whether they wanted to vote.

In the survey, it is emphasized that the projection values only reflect a mood for the parties at the current time. It does not predict the election outcome. Furthermore, there may be changes for the different parties due to varying mobilization successes until election Sunday. The survey for the „Politbarometer Extra“ was conducted by the Mannheim Research Group Elections between June 5th and 6th, 2024, with 1,223 randomly selected eligible voters surveyed by telephone and online. The survey is representative of the eligible population in Germany. The margin of error is approximately +/- three percentage points for a share of 40 percent and +/- two percentage points for a share of 10 percent. (vk with material from dpa)
