South Korea Resumes Propaganda Broadcasts Towards North Korea

In response to North Korea sending around 600 balloons filled with trash over the border to South Korea, the South Korean military has announced that they will resume their psychological warfare tactics. Huge speakers will be used to broadcast propaganda towards the other side.

Amid escalating tensions with North Korea, South Korea has decided to resume its propaganda broadcasts towards the isolated neighboring country. South Korea will set up loudspeaker systems at the border and send announcements towards North Korea, the Presidential office in Seoul stated after a meeting of the National Security Council.

The broadcasts towards the north were suspended in 2018 during a period of temporary reconciliation. Both North and South Korea had used such propaganda broadcasts as a means of psychological warfare.

The population has been advised not to touch the balloons that were sent over from North Korea. In response to the repeated sending of hundreds of trash-filled balloons by North Korea over the heavily fortified border, South Korea has taken this immediate action.

Between Saturday and Sunday morning (local time), about 330 „trash balloons“ were launched from North Korea, with over 80 landing on South Korean territory. The rest likely did not reach their target. The balloons contained items such as old paper and plastic, with initial investigations showing that they did not contain any dangerous substances. Despite this, people have been urged not to touch the objects that have landed.
