Floating Islands Instead of Buoy Chain at Hechtsee: Benefits of the Measure

In an effort to protect the fish sanctuary and enhance the ecological balance of Hechtsee, a decision has been made to replace the existing plastic buoy chain with floating, planted islands. These new floating islands on the northern shore serve as a refuge for young fish, nesting grounds for waterfowl, and a food source for insects, making them not only visually appealing but also environmentally beneficial for the lake above Kufstein.

Previously, a buoy chain was used to demarcate the fish sanctuary area near the Hechtsee outflow. However, due to wear and damage, the decision was made to implement this new ecological measure during the necessary renewal process. The floating islands are constructed with a stainless steel mesh lined with coconut fibers and filled with cork and substrate. Additionally, pre-cultivated water plant mats are attached to the islands, with a focus on selecting native plant species, such as the yellow iris commonly found at Thierberg.

These floating islands have been anchored in their designated positions in the water using stone weights to secure them to the lake bed. They not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also create new habitats. Young fish can seek shelter beneath the islands, while the plants growing from the sides provide spawning grounds for various fish species. Moreover, the islands offer food and habitat for insects and can serve as protected breeding sites for waterfowl.

To implement this project, collaboration with experts in the field was essential. The measure was planned in coordination with the fishing lessees and supported by the Tyrolean State Fisheries Association. It is important to note that fishing and swimming remain prohibited in the sanctuary area delineated by the islands, with a request to refrain from accessing the bathing islands.

The ecological benefits of replacing the plastic buoy chain with floating islands extend beyond just protecting the fish sanctuary. This innovative approach not only enhances the biodiversity of Hechtsee but also contributes to the overall health of the ecosystem. By creating new habitats and preserving the natural balance of the lake, these floating islands represent a step towards sustainable conservation efforts in the region.
