Exploring Countries and Cultures: A TV Adventure

In a recent TV program on NDR, adventurers Lisa Synowski and Dominik Dührsen took viewers on a seven-week cycling journey through the island of Cuba. While most people are familiar with the images of tobacco, dance, stunning beaches, and colorful vintage cars in Cuba, the duo delved deeper into the lives of the locals amidst economic crises and supply shortages.

Starting their journey in Santiago de Cuba, the cyclists made their way to Havana, facing challenges like potholes and a shortage of spare parts along the road. With the creative assistance of a local bike mechanic, they were able to continue their tour. In Manzanillo, they stayed with Catherine and Rey, a young couple determined to remain in Cuba despite inflation and economic difficulties.

Venturing further into the heart of the country, they explored untouched places off the beaten path, including a visit to an orchard and vegetable farm on the north coast, where they experienced Cuban rural life firsthand. Throughout their 1500-kilometer journey, they encountered many kind and helpful individuals, highlighting the resilience and optimism of the Cuban people in the face of poverty and emigration.
