Chaos at G-7 Summit in Italy: 2500 Police Officers Forced to Stay on Decaying Ship

The G-7 summit in southern Italy is causing chaos as 2500 police officers have been forced to stay on a decaying cruise ship. The ship, named „Mykonos Magic,“ is in a deplorable state, with terrible sanitary conditions according to the officers.

While the participants of the G-7 summit are staying in a luxurious five-star beach hotel in Borgo Egnazia, the police officers assigned to secure the event have been lodged on the rundown cruise ship. The police union COISP reported that the ship had „terrible sanitary conditions“ and has since been seized.

The „Mykonos Magic,“ anchored in the port of Brindisi, had unusable toilets, dilapidated showers, and flooded cabins, leading to numerous complaints from the officers. Reports from the newspaper „La Republica“ mentioned that the air conditioning was broken, water was dripping from the ceiling in the cabins, and the officers had to wait for hours for a cold meal. Due to the heat and faulty air conditioning, they were forced to sleep with their cabin doors open.

The situation led the police union SILF to describe the living conditions of the 2500 officers as being „packed like mice“ on the ship. Despite the discomfort, the officers were required to stay on the vessel for the duration of the three-day summit, which will be attended by world leaders such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden. Security forces from across Italy have been deployed to Apulia for the event.

The „Mykonos Magic“ was previously operated by Costa Cruises and is now owned by the Greek ferry company Seajets. Following the complaints and the deteriorating conditions on the ship, the officers have been relocated to hotels in the area to ensure their well-being during the summit. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of law enforcement personnel and the need for adequate accommodations during such high-profile events.
