Burghausen Medieval Festival: A Blast from the Past

Today, Burghausen is transported back to the year 1526. The castle overlooking the city is under the rule of Duke Wilhelm IV. The army gathers there to prepare for a three-day stay before heading towards Salzburg. That sets the historical stage for the Burgfest that begins today.

In the year 2024, the festival promises three days of extensive programs featuring music, dance, marksmanship, and show combat groups, as well as jesters, puppeteers, and herald players. The agenda includes theater performances and a fairy tale tent. In addition to the varied shows put on by 60 groups, visitors can also immerse themselves in historical camp life with craftsmen and farmer markets, threshing demonstrations, crossbow and archery contests, as well as horseshoe throwing.

The highlight of tomorrow, Saturday, is the historical play „The Army Arrives,“ kicking off at 2 pm at the town square. Following the performance, Duke Wilhelm I and his entourage – consisting of over 1500 people, 40 horses, and seven carriages – will proceed from Ludwigsberg to Wackerstraße/Castle Peace corner, and back via Unghauser Straße and Peace Road to the castle.

On Sunday, the festivities at the castle begin as early as 11 am with herald players at the weapon square and in front of the Hedwig Chapel. The final act, the music and dance group Avalon, will take the stage at 5:45 pm.

The Burghausen Medieval Festival offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the rich history and vibrant culture of the medieval period. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable journey to the past!
