Many people are now eager to find out how they can best see the Supermoon. This week, the Hunter’s Moon will appear as the third Supermoon of 2024 in the sky. It will shine particularly bright.

The third Supermoon of the year 2024 will be visible this week. The full moon in October, known as the Hunter’s Moon, will rise at sunset and only disappear in the early morning. It is approximately 357,364 km away from Earth, which is the shortest distance of a full moon this year, as explained by AstroPixels. A Supermoon, according to the Adler Planetarium, is 30 percent brighter and 15 percent larger than an ordinary full moon when it is at its closest point to Earth (Perigee). For the moon, this distance is 356,400 kilometers, while the Apogee (farthest point from Earth) is 406,700 kilometers away.

Shortest distance reached by noon

On Thursday, October 17, the moon will reach its full moon position in the constellation Pisces around 13:26 CEST. However, we will only be able to see it at 18:11 when it rises. At this point, it will already be well above the horizon, so it is better to view it in the night from October 16 to 17. Additionally, the moon will still shine very brightly in the sky on Friday night.

Start of hunting season

It is called the „Hunter’s Moon“ because the moon in October traditionally marks the start of the hunting season. Another name for this moon is also „Blood Moon“ because of its reddish glow. However, the term „Blood Moon“ is typically associated with a total lunar eclipse, not with the Hunter’s Moon itself. The Supermoon on Thursday will be the first full moon this autumn. The next and final full moon of this year will then take place on November 15.

Many people are excited to witness the Hunter’s Moon, also known as the Blood Moon, which will be the third Supermoon of 2024. The unique brightness and size of the Supermoon make it a spectacular sight in the night sky. If you want to catch a glimpse of this natural wonder, make sure to look out for the Hunter’s Moon on Thursday evening. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the next Supermoon in November as well.
