A chemical accident occurred at a textile company in Blaichach on Monday morning just before 7 a.m. According to the police, firefighters, emergency medical services, and the THW were still on site in the evening to contain a leaked chemical mixture and ventilate the building. The emergency measures are expected to continue into the night, causing traffic disruptions in the immediate vicinity of the company.

The company building can only be entered with a respiratory mask, as stated by the police. However, there is no danger to residents. The police suspect a work accident: 300 liters of chemical substance leaked. Current investigations indicate a work accident caused by a technical defect, resulting in an explosion in a tank of a machine. As a result, approximately 300 liters of liquid chemical substance leaked from the 1,000-liter container. This substance reacted with another, producing harmful fumes. The fire department has been working for hours to contain the toxic mixture to prevent further harmful fumes.

According to the police, most of the liquid flowed into the basement of the company. The authorities are now assessing whether the fire department can pump out the liquid or if a specialized company is required. Unconfirmed reports suggest that it may be a sodium hydroxide solution used as a component for a caustic soda solution.

After one employee came into contact with the toxic fumes, he was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries but has since been discharged. A total of 19 people were treated on-site by emergency medical services, including three firefighters and THW personnel. They have also been released. The police continue to advise residents to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution and avoid the area if possible. A campsite was partially evacuated for a short time, but all guests have now returned to their pitches.

Although there is a pungent, vinegar-like smell in the air, the police assure that there is no health risk in the wider area around the building. Further evacuation measures are not currently planned.
